Malcolm Brodlie Paediatric Respiratory Physician Newcastle is a leading expert in children’s respiratory health. With a strong clinical and academic background, Dr Malcolm Brodlie combines research excellence with hands-on patient care. Dr Brodlie serves as an honorary consultant paediatric respiratory physician at the renowned Great North Children’s Hospital. His special interests include cystic fibrosis and cardio-pulmonary transplantation. Through focused clinical care, he addresses the complex respiratory needs of children across the region.
As a clinical senior lecturer at Newcastle University, Dr Brodlie leads a dynamic research group in the Translational and Clinical Research Institute. His academic journey includes a PhD earned during a Cystic Fibrosis Trust/MRC Clinical Research Training Fellowship. Moreover, in 2015, he secured an MRC Clinician Scientist Fellowship, further demonstrating his commitment to impactful research.
Much of Dr Brodlie’s research centers on understanding the pathogenesis of cystic fibrosis lung disease, including inflammation and infection. These investigations support the development of innovative treatment strategies. His broader interests span paediatric respiratory epidemiology and airway physiology, areas crucial to improving long-term outcomes in young patients.
In addition to his clinical and research roles, Dr Brodlie actively contributes to academic training. He is Director of the North East NIHR Integrated Academic Training Programme for Doctors and Dentists. This role allows him to mentor the next generation of clinical academics.
Dr Brodlie chairs the Joint Research Executive Scientific Committee in Newcastle. He also serves as an Associate Editor for BMJ Paediatrics Open. His influence extends nationally as a member of the UK Cystic Fibrosis Registry Steering Committee. Through these roles, he helps shape policy and contributes to the dissemination of cutting-edge research.
