Marieke Emonts Consultant Paediatrician Newcastle brings decades of clinical and research excellence to children’s healthcare. She specialises in paediatric infectious diseases and immunology, working at the Great North Children’s Hospital within the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI). Her areas of expertise include bacterial infections, host-pathogen interaction, complex infections, antimicrobial stewardship, and healthcare inequality.
Professor Marieke Emonts qualified in Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Leiden University in 2000. She trained in Paediatrics in Rotterdam, where she earned her PhD in 2008. Her research explored genetic factors that influence infectious and inflammatory diseases. By 2013, she completed subspecialty training in both Rotterdam and Newcastle upon Tyne.
Today, she holds regular infectious diseases clinics, treats hospitalised patients, and offers consultations across the North East. Her clinical input is widely sought after by colleagues in multiple hospitals. Thanks to her collaborative approach, children facing complex infections receive timely, tailored care.
Professor Emonts is also an Honorary Professor at Newcastle University. Her research is both national and international in scope. She leads and participates in studies ranging from basic science to clinical trials. Much of her work helps identify infections early, improving outcomes for young patients.
She also designs studies that evaluate infection management strategies. These directly impact clinical practice, ensuring patient care evolves with the latest findings. Additionally, her work supports better antimicrobial use, helping preserve drug effectiveness for future generations.
Beyond the clinic and lab, Professor Emonts serves as Curriculum Director for Clinical Research Programmes at Newcastle University. She oversees both attendance-based and eLearning courses. Her academic leadership ensures that tomorrow’s researchers and clinicians are prepared for the fast-changing medical landscape.
Furthermore, she is an active member of the European Society of Paediatric Infectious Diseases, contributing to global efforts in advancing child health. Her dual role as consultant and educator makes her a vital link between evidence-based care and its practical delivery.
