About Us

The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) is a respected religious authority in South Africa, dedicated to providing Islamic guidance, education, and social development. Established in 1945, the MJC serves as a Muslim Judiciary, supporting the Muslim community through religious rulings (Fatawa), Da’wah (spreading Islamic teachings), Halaal certification, and marriage counselling.


Our History

Key Milestones in MJC History

  • 17 February 1945 – An Executive Committee of 19 members was elected, and a Draft Constitution was adopted.
  • March 1945 – A public meeting in Cape Town City Hall formally announced the establishment of the MJC. The Constitution was read out and approved.
  •  This body continues to operate today, providing strategic religious oversight.
  • 1945 onwards – The MJC began conducting Halaal inspections, laying the foundation for Halaal certification in South Africa.
  • 1984 – The MJC Head Office moved to Cashel Avenue, Athlone, repurposing a former church as its administrative headquarters.

  • Conducting Halaal inspections and certifications for food, beverages, and other consumables.
  • Ensuring businesses meet the Islamic dietary laws as outlined in Shari’ah.
  • Regulating Halaal compliance in the hospitality and food industry.

Social Development & Community Support

  • Marriage counselling and family support services.
  • Assisting in charitable initiatives to support those in need.
