The Obesity Unit South Africa is committed to helping patients struggling with obesity. Our accredited Centre of Excellence is based in Bedfordview and offers Bariatric Surgery as a proven solution for weight loss. Obesity is a complex condition that requires a multi-disciplinary approach, and we provide patients with personalized care throughout their journey.
Our state-of-the-art facility offers a variety of weight loss surgeries to address morbid obesity, a condition that can lead to serious health problems such as diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnoea. Through Bariatric Surgery, we aim to help patients achieve substantial weight loss, improve health, and enhance their quality of life.
We offer the following Bariatric Surgery procedures at Obesity Unit South Africa:
Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG): This surgery involves removing approximately 80% of the stomach to create a sleeve-like structure. By reducing stomach size, patients can eat less, leading to significant weight loss. The procedure also alters hormones that help control hunger, making it easier to manage food intake.
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RNY): This procedure creates a small pouch from the stomach and connects it to the small intestine. Food bypasses most of the stomach and the first part of the intestine, restricting food intake and calorie absorption, helping patients lose weight.
Intragastric Balloon: This non-invasive procedure places a saline-filled silicone balloon in the stomach. The balloon takes up space, reducing the amount of food the stomach can hold, and helps patients feel fuller faster. The balloon stays in the stomach for six months before being naturally passed out of the body.
Allurion Balloon: A swallowable capsule that inflates in the stomach, reducing food intake and aiding weight loss. It is a non-surgical, convenient option for patients looking to reduce weight.
These surgeries are ideal for patients with a BMI of 35-39 and accompanying health conditions, or a BMI of 40 or higher. Additionally, Intragastric Balloon treatments are available for patients with lower BMIs.
At Obesity Unit South Africa, we understand that obesity is not just a physical condition. It is often a result of genetics, lifestyle habits, and medical issues. Therefore, our holistic approach involves not only surgery but also dietary counseling, exercise plans, and psychological support. We provide continuous care, ensuring that patients maintain a healthy lifestyle after surgery.
Our facility is equipped with the latest medical technology to deliver the best outcomes for our patients. We also offer 24/7 availability through our Emergency Department, ensuring patients receive immediate support if needed.
Funding is available through various medical aid providers, including Discovery, Medscheme, and GEMS. While co-payments may apply, we aim to make treatment accessible to as many patients as possible.
