Peter Carey Consultant Haematologist Newcastle leads in diagnostic haematopathology, paediatric haematology, and haemoglobinopathy. He graduated in Newcastle and further trained at Addenbrookes’ Hospital in Cambridge and Newcastle. After gaining valuable experience, he served as a consultant haematologist in Sunderland for 15 years. Then, in 2006, he returned to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) to continue his work. Currently, Dr Carey focuses entirely on laboratory diagnostic haematopathology.
Dr Carey specialises in several sub-fields including diagnostic haematopathology, paediatric haematology, and haemoglobinopathy. Moreover, he acts as the lead clinician for the North of England Haematological Oncology Diagnostic Service (NEHODS). His expertise plays a crucial role in improving diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes. Since 2015, his clinical practice has revolved around laboratory diagnostics, making him a key figure in this field.
Over the years, Dr Carey has contributed significantly to medical literature. He has published more than 50 papers and book chapters. These publications cover topics like leukaemia, lymphoma, bone marrow transplantation, haematological adverse drug reactions, diagnostic haematopathology, and haemoglobinopathy. Furthermore, he has researched the provision of haematological services in Low to Middle Income Countries, showing his commitment to global health.
Dr Carey also serves as an RCPath examiner. From 2015 to 2018, he led the final FRCPath morphology examination. Additionally, he contributes as a member of the Scientific Advisory Group for the UK National External Quality Assessment Scheme (NEQAS) board. His involvement ensures high standards in haematological diagnostics and training across the UK.
