He treats patients with obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol—conditions linked to the metabolic syndrome.
Professor Anstee leads the regional multidisciplinary “fatty liver” service. His clinical work spans acute and chronic liver conditions. These include NAFLD, Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH), Alcoholic Liver Disease, and Autoimmune Hepatitis. In addition, he manages Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC), cirrhosis and its complications, and liver transplant care.
Because of his specialist expertise, he offers tailored treatment pathways. Moreover, he ensures every patient benefits from the latest developments in liver care.
As Chair of Experimental Hepatology in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Professor Anstee leads innovative liver research. He investigates the biological causes of liver disease and develops advanced diagnostic tools. His translational research—from lab bench to bedside—makes a global impact.
He serves as Chief Investigator of the European NAFLD Registry and leads many international clinical trials. These efforts help bring new treatments to patients faster. Additionally, his research has improved how doctors assess risk and track progression in liver disease.
Trained in medicine at University College London, Professor Anstee won First Prize in Medicine during his final exams. He later trained in Hepatology, Gastroenterology, and General Medicine in London. His clinical focus sharpened at the Liver and Anti-Viral Unit at St Mary’s Hospital.
He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and active in many liver-focused societies, including EASL, BASL, and BSG.
Beyond the clinic, he supports patient advocacy as a member of the British Liver Trust and LIVErNORTH. Outside of work, Professor Anstee enjoys sailing and theatre—pursuits that reflect his well-rounded approach to life and medicine.
