Rachel Agbeko Consultant Paediatric Intensivist Newcastle leads with dedication, innovation, and clinical excellence. She currently works at the prestigious Great North Children’s Hospital, providing specialist care in sepsis and traumatic brain injury. With over a decade of focused experience, she brings a global perspective to paediatric intensive care.
Dr Rachel Agbeko completed her paediatrics and intensive care training across three world-renowned healthcare systems. Initially, she trained in The Netherlands at Sophia Children’s Hospital in Rotterdam and St Radboud Hospital in Nijmegen. Following this, she advanced her skills at Great Ormond Street Hospital in the UK and at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. This global training shaped her holistic, evidence-driven approach to care.
Beyond her clinical work, Dr Agbeko actively drives innovation through translational research. After completing her PhD at the Institute of Child Health, UCL London, she continued leading ground-breaking initiatives. She heads the GNCH Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Research Group and serves as Principal Investigator on multiple national and international trials. Additionally, she co-founded the European Paediatric Critical Care in Bone Marrow Transplant Interest Group.
Her dedication to patient outcomes extends into the realm of quality improvement. While in Toronto, Dr Agbeko earned a postgraduate Certificate in Patient Safety and Quality Improvement from the University of Toronto. This training reinforced her evidence-based practices and strengthened her leadership in care delivery. She now serves as the Quality Assurance Lead for Children’s Services at GNCH, ensuring every child receives optimal care.
Dr Rachel Agbeko’s primary clinical interests include the complex treatment of paediatric sepsis and traumatic brain injury. Her approach blends the latest research with real-time clinical expertise. Therefore, patients under her care benefit from personalised and advanced treatment strategies. As medical science evolves, she ensures that patient care does too.
