Rachel O’Donnell Consultant GynaeOncologist Newcastle provides expert care for women with gynaecological cancers. She leads the Gynaecology Oncology services at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary, working in a dedicated Women’s Health Unit. Rachel coordinates multidisciplinary care, ensuring patients receive the most advanced diagnostics and treatments.

She collaborates closely with consultant colleagues and advanced nursing practitioners, offering outpatient diagnostics and therapies. These include advanced scanning, hysteroscopy, colposcopy, and minor operative procedures. Rachel performs advanced open, laparoscopic, and robotic surgeries. She coordinates complex multidisciplinary procedures with colorectal, upper GI, sarcoma, urology, and plastic surgery teams. Additionally, she runs the regional Specialist Vulval Clinic. Here, she provides care for women with complex benign, premalignant, and cancerous vulval conditions. She also serves as a core member of the regional sarcoma MDT.

Education and Training Excellence

Rachel graduated from Edinburgh Medical School in 2005 and completed her Obstetrics and Gynaecology training in Edinburgh. She then undertook a Fellowship at the Northern Gynaecological Oncology Centre (NGOC). In 2016, she completed a PhD in translational ovarian cancer research. From 2016 to 2020, she held a prestigious NIHR Clinical Lectureship.

Medical Education Leadership

Rachel actively contributes to medical education at Newcastle University. She serves as Senior Clinical Tutor for the Newcastle Local Education Programme (LEP) and is the Undergraduate Medical Education Quality Lead. She supervises both Masters of Research (MRes) and MBBS students. Additionally, she acts as deputy course lead for the regional Surgical Skills Training Programme at the Newcastle Surgical Training Centre (NSTC) and teaches on the Royal College of Surgeons’ CCrISP course.

Research Contributions and Mentorship

Rachel participates in the GynaeOncology Research Group at Newcastle University’s Translational and Clinical Research Institute. She supervises both Doctorate and Masters students and runs multiple wet-lab and clinical research projects. She encourages motivated students and clinicians to get involved by contacting her directly. Her research advances the understanding of ovarian and other gynaecological cancers.
