Ranjit Mahanta Consultant Psychiatrist Sussex leads in providing specialised mental health care, focusing on old age psychiatry. Since 2021, Dr Mahanta has served as a visiting Consultant Psychiatrist at Priory Hospital Ticehurst House. He has also been a Consultant Psychiatrist in the NHS Surrey since 2011. His current role involves leading an inpatient unit for severe functional and organic mental illness in patients aged 65 and above. Throughout his career, Dr Mahanta has taken on leadership roles, including NHS Clinical Senate membership, and acts as Guardian of Safe Working Hours.

Training and Qualifications of Ranjit Mahanta Consultant Psychiatrist Sussex

Dr Mahanta completed his medical degree at St Bartholomew’s & The Royal London medical school in 2003. He pursued postgraduate training in old age psychiatry at London teaching hospitals. By 2008, he became a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists after finishing his core training. During his higher specialist training, Dr Mahanta earned a Master’s in Neuroscience with distinction from the Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College London in 2010. He also completed a Diploma in Geriatric Medicine and entered the GMC specialist register as a specialist in Old Age Psychiatry in 2011. Additionally, he is an Approved Clinician and Section 12 Approved.

Clinical and Research Interests

Dr Mahanta’s research work began during his postgraduate training. Notably, he was the first author of a study at the Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College, investigating glaucoma treatments in dementia patients. He remains dedicated to integrating research into his clinical NHS work. His clinical interests include mental health issues related to Parkinson’s disease, reflecting his commitment to advancing treatment in neurodegenerative conditions.
