Reuben Saharia Consultant Emergency Medicine Newcastle leads the Emergency Department at the RVI’s Great North Trauma and Emergency Centre. He specialises in trauma, ultrasound, and medical education. Additionally, he runs soft tissue injury clinics, ensuring patients receive timely and expert care.
Originally from Newcastle, Mr Saharia trained in medicine at Edinburgh University, qualifying in 2001. During medical school, he developed a strong interest in Emergency Medicine. He strengthened this interest during his first SHO role at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, gaining valuable hands-on experience.
In 2002, Mr Saharia returned to the North East to pursue a surgical route into Emergency Medicine. He rotated through several hospitals as a surgical trainee. Then, in 2006, he began registrar training, building expertise across emergency and trauma care. By 2010, he secured a Consultant position at the Royal Victoria Infirmary.
Since joining the RVI, Mr Saharia has served as Emergency Department Trauma Lead. He worked closely with colleagues to establish the RVI as a Regional Major Trauma Centre. His leadership ensured high standards in trauma response and patient care.
Mr Saharia has a deep commitment to medical education. From 2013 to 2016, he served as Departmental Educational Lead and College Tutor. He continues to direct and teach on Advanced Life Support, European Trauma, and Trauma Simulation courses. Moreover, he holds an Honorary Clinical Lecturer role at Newcastle University. His guidance supports the next generation of emergency medicine professionals.
Beyond teaching, Mr Saharia runs specialised soft tissue injury clinics. These clinics provide focused, expert treatment for injuries requiring careful attention. By combining practical skills with patient-centred care, he ensures each patient receives optimal treatment.
In May 2017, Mr Saharia was appointed Head of Department at the RVI. He managed the department effectively until August 2019, improving operational systems and team collaboration. Even after stepping down, he continues to contribute significantly to trauma care and medical education in Newcastle.
