Dr Howes graduated from Edinburgh University in 2005. Following graduation, he completed Foundation Years training in South East Scotland. Then, in 2007, he joined the Royal Navy as a medical officer. He supported the Royal Marines before moving to the North East for specialist Emergency Medicine training in 2010.
