Richard Leech Anaesthetist Maidstone brings over 25 years of experience in delivering specialist anaesthetic care. He currently serves as a Consultant Anaesthetist at KIMS Hospital and within the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. His deep commitment to clinical excellence ensures patients always receive the highest standard of care.
Having graduated from King’s College School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1990, Dr Richard Leech embarked on an impressive medical journey. He trained in leading hospitals across East Kent, East Sussex, and London. Notably, he completed a liver transplant fellowship at King’s College Hospital, strengthening his expertise in complex surgical procedures.
Dr Leech expanded his horizons through a sabbatical year at the Royal Perth Hospital in Western Australia. During that time, he worked extensively with the Royal Flying Doctor Service. This hands-on experience in remote areas gave him a unique perspective on delivering critical care under challenging conditions.
In 1999, Dr Leech was appointed as a Consultant Anaesthetist at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. His contributions have been consistent and wide-ranging ever since.
Dr Leech has been instrumental in developing long-term vascular access services. He is the Lead Clinician for procedures involving Portacaths, PICC lines, Arm Ports, and Tunnelled Central Venous Catheters. These services are vital for patients undergoing chemotherapy, particularly within the Kent Oncology Centre.
Responding to increasing demand, he launched the Portacath service at Maidstone Hospital in 2010. Since then, he has personally completed over 2,500 successful implantations. This unmatched experience makes him a trusted expert in the South East of England.
Patients benefit from Dr Leech’s broad skill set in anaesthesia, including:
Anaesthesia for major cancer surgeries
Thoracic epidural analgesia
Spinal anaesthesia for orthopaedic surgery
Total Intravenous Anaesthesia (TIVA) and sedation techniques
His hands-on, patient-first approach delivers comfort and confidence before, during, and after surgery.
Over the years, Dr Leech has held key leadership roles at the Trust. These include:
Lead Consultant for Obstetric Anaesthesia (1999–2011)

Clinic Director for Critical Care (2011–2015)
Thanks to his clinical insight and managerial skills, he consistently improves standards and patient outcomes.
