Description

Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Neurosurgery Sydney

Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Neurosurgery Sydney offers complete care for brain, spine, and nerve problems that need surgery. We treat general and trauma neurosurgery cases. Our team has special skills in cerebrovascular surgery, spine surgery, CSF circulation surgery, epilepsy surgery, acoustic neuroma, and pituitary surgery through a transsphenoidal approach.

Advanced Neurosurgery Facilities

We use advanced tools such as intraoperative MRI, stereotaxic navigation, and minimally invasive EEG monitoring. We also have access to a modern hybrid operating room. In addition, we work as part of the Neurosciences group with neurology, ENT, ophthalmology, and pain services. Our surgeons work closely with anaesthetics, radiology, oncology, pathology, and rehabilitation. This teamwork helps patients with complex conditions receive complete care.

History and Service

Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Neurosurgery Sydney has served the community since 1938. It was one of the first purpose-built neurosurgery units in Australia. We care for adults with both urgent and long-term neurological conditions. Services include emergency treatment as well as planned surgery.

Neuropathology Support

Our work is supported by the Department of Neuropathology at RPA. This is the only standalone neuropathology service on the east coast of Australia. It provides diagnosis for neurosurgery and neurology cases, testing for brain tumours, and forensic neuropathology. It is also the NSW state referral lab for Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. The department runs the Australian Sports Brain Bank and the MS Research Australia Brain Bank.

Referrals and Appointments

To use our service, referrals must be sent via the Sydney LHD Women’s Health and RPA Hospital Services Neurosurgery HealthLink SmartForm. You can access this through Best Practice, Genie, Medical Director, or the MyHealthLink Portal. Once we receive the referral, our staff will contact you to arrange an appointment.

Training and Research

Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Neurosurgery Sydney is a leading centre for training and research. We teach medical students, pathology trainees, and research fellows. Our close link with the University of Sydney supports this work. We aim to give every patient expert, safe, and compassionate care while advancing neurosurgery for the future.
