Saad Rassam Haematologist Maidstone brings decades of unrivalled expertise to the diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders. From advanced research to patient-centred care, Dr Rassam stands at the forefront of haematological practice in Kent and beyond.
Dr Saad Rassam graduated in 1980 from the University of Baghdad. He pursued post-graduate training in haematology in the UK, starting in 1986 under a prestigious scholarship. His training included positions at the Royal Free Hospital and Edgware General Hospital. He later advanced to Senior Registrar and Lecturer at esteemed institutions such as St Bartholomew’s Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital.
During this time, he focused on immune reconstitution following stem cell transplants in children. His dedication earned him Membership in the Royal College of Physicians (1989) and the Royal College of Pathologists (1992), followed by Fellowships in both.
In 1992, Dr Rassam was appointed Consultant in Haematology and Oncology at Queen Mary’s Hospital, Sidcup. He established a haemato-oncology unit that delivered cutting-edge treatments including stem cell transplants. In 2004, he joined Maidstone Hospital, significantly contributing to the Kent Oncology Centre. For five years, he served as Head of the Department of Haematology and Associate Director.
His leadership helped develop a comprehensive haemato-oncology service for residents across West Kent. His clinical influence remains vital in the continued evolution of cancer care in the region.
Dr Rassam has a particular interest in lymphoid malignancies and immune-based cancer therapies. His research began with a fellowship from the Microscopical Society, leading to advanced training at Harvard University. On returning to the UK, he founded a lab to study tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes, leading to groundbreaking research in lymphoma.
His studies gained recognition at major international conferences, including the American Society of Haematology and the International Conference on Malignant Lymphoma.
Dr Rassam actively contributes to major professional bodies. He serves as a member of the British Society of Haematology, American Society of Haematology, and several specialist subgroups. He co-authors national guidelines and is deeply involved in national and local research initiatives.
His work includes clinical trial leadership, national study proposals, and advisory roles for the Royal College of Pathologists. As Chair of the Hemato-Oncology Group in the Kent Cancer Network, he updates regional treatment pathways for lymphoma and CLL. Notably, he is the UK Chief Investigator for the ASCEND study in CLL.
