Sharmila Jandial Consultant Paediatric Rheumatologist Newcastle is a recognised expert based at the Great North Children’s Hospital. Dr Sharmila Jandial specialises in managing complex conditions like juvenile idiopathic arthritis, juvenile dermatomyositis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and scleroderma. Her dedication to paediatric rheumatology, education, and research makes her a leader in her field.
With extensive training and hands-on experience, Dr Jandial has treated hundreds of children with complex rheumatologic conditions. She brings compassion and clarity to each diagnosis, ensuring every family understands their child’s care pathway. Furthermore, her collaborative approach ensures no child faces their condition alone.
After graduating from Glasgow University, Dr Jandial chose Newcastle to complete her paediatric training. Early in her career, she demonstrated a passion for paediatric rheumatology. Notably, she received an Educational Research Fellowship from Arthritis Research UK to explore how best to teach joint examination in children. This marked the beginning of her commitment to both clinical excellence and educational development.
Appointed as a Consultant at the Great North Children’s Hospital in 2011, Dr Jandial has worked alongside a dedicated multidisciplinary team. This team-based approach allows patients to benefit from a wide range of expertise. Moreover, it ensures coordinated and holistic care for children and young people.
Dr Jandial’s role goes beyond clinical care. She is a CSAC Assessment Adviser and plays a significant role in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. She actively researches educational strategies to improve early diagnosis and referral of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis. As a result, her work is shaping the future of paediatric rheumatology education across the UK.
