About

Smartway2fitness Limited, based in York, is led by Ian Mulrooney, a dedicated and highly qualified Sports and Injury Therapist. Ian brings over a decade of hands-on experience to his work, offering expert care to clients at all levels of fitness and mobility.

He qualified in 2009 with a Level 5 Advanced Diploma in Sports Therapy from the Active Health Group in Manchester, achieving a distinction. In 2012, he became an Anatomy Trains Structural Integration (ATSI) Practitioner, specialising in posture, fascia, and functional movement.

Ian’s journey into therapy began after a serious cycling accident. A sports therapist helped him recover fully, which inspired him to change direction and help others through injury recovery and performance enhancement. Today, Ian’s approach combines anatomical expertise with a passion for helping people move better and feel stronger.

He is a member of the Federation of Holistic Therapists, the International Association of Structural Integrators, and is registered with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council.

Services

Ian offers a wide range of therapies tailored to support recovery, improve performance, and enhance wellbeing. His services include:

  • Sports and Injury Therapy
Ian delivers personalised treatment that targets pain and dysfunction. He combines massage, mobilisation, and recovery techniques to restore movement and prevent further injury.

  • Structural Integration (ATSI)
This method addresses posture and body alignment by working with the fascia system. Over a series of sessions, Ian helps clients stand, move, and breathe more efficiently.

  • Myofascial and Manual Therapy
He uses advanced techniques such as craniosacral therapy, visceral manipulation, and neural release to improve mobility and reduce discomfort.

  • Strength and Conditioning Guidance
With a background in sport and training, Ian offers practical advice to improve strength, posture, and endurance. His programmes are adaptable and client-specific.

  • Athlete and Event Support
Ian has worked with triathletes, cyclists, and endurance runners across the UK, Europe, and North America. He supports athletes before, during, and after events with injury prevention, route logistics, and wellbeing care.

Additional Information

Ian has worked in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and across Europe. His experience includes supporting athletes, celebrities, and teams in endurance sports such as triathlon and cycling. He also manages event logistics—from planning routes to organising nutrition and accommodation.

A keen athlete himself, Ian has completed over 50 half-marathons and 20 marathons, with impressive personal bests (1:14 for a half, 2:40 for a full). He later explored fell running, ultra-marathons, triathlons, and cycling. After returning to rugby while completing a BSc in Information Systems, he transitioned to gym training and bodybuilding. Today, he still enjoys cycling, trail running, and wild swimming.

Ian remains committed to ongoing education. He trains with global leaders in therapy such as Jean-Pierre Barral, James Earls, and Leon Chaitow, ensuring that clients benefit from the latest research and techniques.

Whether you’re recovering from injury or striving for peak performance, Smartway2fitness offers the expert support and personalised care you need to succeed.
