Stephen Owens Consultant Paediatrician Newcastle leads the way in paediatric infectious diseases and immunology at the Great North Children’s Hospital. He specializes in tropical diseases and outbreak response. With over two decades of medical experience, Dr Owens provides expert care for children with complex infections and immune system disorders. Moreover, he balances his clinical duties with academic and research roles, strengthening paediatric healthcare in Newcastle and beyond.
Dr Owens graduated from the University of Edinburgh Medical School in 1998. Following this, he completed his general paediatric training in Glasgow and Edinburgh. He then expanded his knowledge by studying tropical paediatrics in Liverpool, London, and The Gambia. Later, he returned to Newcastle, completing higher clinical training in paediatric infectious diseases and immunology by 2013.
Since 2016, Dr Owens has worked as a Consultant at the Great North Children’s Hospital. He cares for children facing unusual or severe infections such as tuberculosis. He also manages cases involving primary immune deficiencies, including those requiring stem cell transplantation. His clinical responsibilities demand sharp diagnostic skills and compassionate patient care.
Besides clinical work, Dr Owens dedicates himself to academic leadership. He holds the position of Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer and Associate Fellow at Newcastle University. Additionally, he supervises postgraduate clinical training for paediatricians under the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH).
He supports vital research activities at the Children’s Bone Marrow Transplant Unit. Dr Owens also mentors Newcastle medical students pursuing global health research projects overseas. His contributions help shape the future of paediatric infectious diseases and immunology.
Dr Owens plays a leading role in paediatric infection networks across Scotland. He serves as the Newcastle lead for the Scottish Paediatric and Adolescent Infection and Immunology National Managed Clinical Network. Through this, he participates in joint clinics in Edinburgh and Glasgow, sharing expertise and improving regional care.
Moreover, Dr Owens acts as Clinical Lead for the UK Government’s Emergency Medical Team. In this capacity, he supports outbreak responses both domestically and internationally. His leadership strengthens healthcare responses to infectious disease emergencies, benefiting communities across the UK and beyond.
