Steven Powell Paediatric Otolaryngologist Newcastle brings two decades of specialist experience in treating ENT conditions in children. Based at the Great North Children’s Hospital and Freeman Hospital, Mr Powell has dedicated his career to paediatric otolaryngology. His commitment to providing the highest level of care continues to shape paediatric ENT services in Newcastle and beyond.
After graduating with distinction from Newcastle University in 2001, Mr Powell completed both basic and higher surgical training in the North East. His early exposure to complex ENT cases sparked his interest in paediatric care, which he pursued with passion. To enhance his expertise, he completed a prestigious fellowship in paediatric ENT at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.
Mr Powell leads the paediatric ENT team at the Great North Children’s Hospital. Since 2016, he has worked closely with the paediatric airway multidisciplinary team. Together, they manage a range of airway conditions affecting children. His extensive experience includes treating tracheostomy patients and performing complex airway reconstructions. With a hands-on approach, he ensures every child receives tailored care and attention.
Mr Powell complements his clinical work with an active research career. He holds a Master’s degree in Health Research from the University of Leeds, earned with distinction. His projects cover crucial ENT topics such as airway stenosis, respiratory papillomatosis, tonsil disease, and the use of balloons for airway treatments. As chair of the NICE Airway Intervention Register from 2015 to 2018, he led national discussions on airway interventions. He continues to contribute as a member of the AIR steering committee.
In addition to his hospital work, Mr Powell plays a significant role in advancing paediatric ENT nationally. He serves as Secretary of the British Association for Paediatric Otolaryngology and sits on the ENT Surgical Specialty Board at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Passionate about teaching, he regularly lectures at national ENT training events, sharing his expertise with the next generation of surgeons.
