About Us

Welcome to York and Selby Talking Therapies, part of a nationwide NHS initiative aimed at making high-quality talking therapies more accessible. Our service follows the guidelines of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), delivering evidence-based treatments for common mental health difficulties.

At some point, one in four people in the UK will experience mental ill health. Life events such as bereavement, job loss, trauma, relationship breakdown, or ongoing work-related stress can all contribute to low mood and anxiety. Our service offers compassionate, professional support to help you manage and overcome these challenges.

We believe in using the least intrusive method of care that still offers effective results. This is known as a stepped care model, where most people begin with low-intensity support. If further help is needed, we provide access to more intensive therapy. Every person’s journey is unique, and we tailor the approach to suit individual needs.

Services

Initial Assessment
Before beginning treatment, you’ll be offered a brief assessment—usually conducted by phone. During this conversation, we’ll ask about your current difficulties and discuss what type of support could be most helpful. If Talking Therapies isn’t the best fit, we will guide you to other suitable services.

Low-Intensity Therapies
For many, low-intensity options provide the right level of support to begin with. These include:

  • Computerised Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (cCBT)

  • Psycho-educational courses

  • Guided self-help, either in person or by telephone

These approaches offer practical tools to help you understand and manage your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.

High-Intensity Therapy
If low-intensity therapy does not meet your needs or if your situation requires more in-depth support, we may recommend stepping up to high-intensity therapy. This typically involves one-to-one Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) delivered by experienced professionals.

Tailored Support
Our team is committed to finding the right pathway for you. By working collaboratively, we aim to help you regain control and cope more effectively with life’s demands.
