Treatment and Home Care for Blisters

Blister packs of different coloured tablets on a yellow background, representing treatment and home care for skin blisters.

Various types of medication in blister packs are used to relieve pain, prevent infection, and support the healing of blisters at home.

Treatment and Home Care for Blisters

Most blisters heal naturally without intervention, but appropriate care can relieve discomfort and prevent infection. The treatment and home care for blisters depends on the blister’s size, cause, and location.

General treatment tips:

  1. Leave it intact
    • If the blister is small, clear, and not painful, the best treatment is to leave it alone.
    • The fluid protects the skin beneath and promotes healing.
  2. Protect the area
    • Use a clean, breathable dressing or blister plaster to prevent further friction.
    • Don’t use tight-fitting shoes or gloves until the area heals.
  3. Clean gently if it bursts
    • Wash with mild soap and warm water.
    • Apply an antibiotic ointment and cover with a sterile bandage.
  4. Do not pop blisters unless necessary
    • If a blister is very large or painful, and you need to drain it:
      • Use a sterile needle to prick the edge gently.
      • Drain the fluid but leave the overlying skin in place as a natural barrier.
  5. Manage pain and inflammation
    • Apply cold compresses for comfort.
    • Use paracetamol or ibuprofen if needed.

Specialised care based on blister type:

  • Burn blisters: Seek medical help for second-degree burns or larger areas.
  • Infected blisters: Treat with antibiotics, either topical or oral, as prescribed.
  • Viral blisters (e.g., herpes): Antiviral creams or oral medications may be prescribed.
  • Allergic blisters: Remove the irritant and use antihistamines or mild corticosteroid creams.

Natural remedies (to use with caution):

  • Aloe vera gel may soothe burns or sunburn blisters.
  • Tea tree oil has antiseptic properties but must be diluted and patch-tested to avoid irritation.

In South Africa, pharmacies often stock:

  • Blister plasters (hydrocolloid dressings)
  • Antiseptic sprays
  • Burn ointments
  • Oral painkillers
  • Antibiotic creams
