Treatment of Chilblains

Treatment of Chilblains

Treatment of chilblains focuses on relieving symptoms, promoting skin healing, and preventing recurrence. While chilblains often resolve on their own in one to three weeks, targeted care can reduce discomfort and speed recovery.

1. Warmth and Protection

The most important treatment is gently warming the affected areas:

  • Use warm (not hot) water to soak hands or feet
  • Layered clothing and insulated gloves/socks help maintain circulation
  • Avoid direct heat, such as hot water bottles or radiators, as rapid heating can worsen symptoms

2. Topical Treatments | Treatment of Chilblains

Several creams and ointments can reduce irritation and aid healing:

  • Calamine lotion: Soothes itching
  • Corticosteroid creams: Reduce inflammation and redness
  • Antiseptic creams: Prevent secondary infection, especially if skin is broken

These should be applied gently and regularly until the skin returns to normal.

3. Oral Medications

In persistent or severe cases, doctors may prescribe:

  • Nifedipine: A calcium channel blocker that improves blood flow and reduces vascular spasm
  • Pain relievers: Such as paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain and swelling

Nifedipine is especially useful for people with recurring or severe chilblains.

4. Wound Care | Treatment of Chilblains

If the skin blisters or breaks, proper wound care is essential to prevent infection:

  • Keep the area clean and dry
  • Apply sterile dressings if necessary
  • Avoid scratching to reduce the risk of ulceration

5. Lifestyle and Home Remedies

  • Stop smoking to improve circulation
  • Stay active to encourage blood flow
  • Maintain a balanced diet, especially rich in vitamins and healthy fats

Prompt treatment of chilblains can greatly reduce symptom duration and help individuals avoid seasonal discomfort. If symptoms don’t improve or worsen, medical advice is essential.
