A beginner’s guide to personality types.
Have you ever wondered why you thrive in social settings while someone else prefers quiet time alone? Or why making decisions feels easy for some people but overwhelming for others?
A lot of it comes down to personality — and one of the most popular tools to understand it is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). It’s a system that sorts people into 16 unique personality types based on how they see the world and make decisions. It’s been around for decades, helping people learn more about themselves — and how to get along with others.
What are personality types?
MBTI personality types are based on four pairs of traits. Each person leans more toward one side of each pair, forming a four-letter personality “code.”
Here’s a quick breakdown:
- I or E — Introversion or Extroversion:
Do you recharge by spending time alone (I) or with others (E)? - N or S — Intuition or Sensing:
Do you focus on the big picture and ideas (N), or prefer facts and practical details (S)? - F or T — Feeling or Thinking:
Do you make decisions based on your values and emotions (F), or logic and facts (T)? - P or J — Perceiving or Judging:
Do you like keeping things flexible and spontaneous (P), or planned and organised (J)?
Combine your preferences, and you get a personality type like INFP or ESTJ — each with its own strengths, challenges, and way of navigating life.
The 16 personality types
Here’s a summary of each MBTI type:
- ISTJ – The Logistician: Responsible, practical, and detail-oriented. They like structure and rules.
- ISFJ – The Defender: Loyal and caring, they quietly protect and support others.
- INFJ – The Advocate: Deep thinkers with strong values, focused on making a difference.
- INTJ – The Architect: Strategic and independent, always planning for the future.
- ISTP – The Virtuoso: Practical problem-solvers who love figuring out how things work.
- ISFP – The Adventurer: Sensitive, creative, and free-spirited — they seek beauty in the moment.
- INFP – The Mediator: Idealistic and kind, they value authenticity and deep connection
- INTP – The Logician: Analytical and curious, always exploring new theories and ideas.
- ESTP – The Entrepreneur: Energetic and bold, they live for excitement and fast-paced challenges.
- ESFP – The Entertainer: Outgoing and playful, they love the spotlight and making others smile.
- ENFP – The Campaigner: Imaginative and enthusiastic, always dreaming big and inspiring others.
- ENTP – The Debater: Clever and curious, they enjoy debating and challenging the norm.
- ESTJ – The Executive: Natural organisers and leaders who like getting things done efficiently.

Understanding your personality type can help you:
- Communicate better with others
- Recognise your natural strengths (and blind spots)
- Find career paths and hobbies that align with your values and style
- Improve your relationships, both personal and professional
It’s not about boxing yourself in — it’s about learning how you operate best and appreciating how others might be wired differently.
A quick note of caution
MBTI is a useful tool for self-discovery, but it’s not a crystal ball. People are complex, and no four-letter code can capture every part of you. Use it as a guide — not a label.
