Paul Brusser | Clinical Psychologist in Kenilworth
About Paul Brusser
Paul Brusser, who holds an M.A. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Cape Town, offers psychotherapy services to adults and teenagers in Kenilworth and Rondebosch, Cape Town. He uses an integrative therapeutic approach, drawing on a variety of psychological theories and practices to meet each client’s unique needs effectively.
Paul’s work is rooted in classic analytic traditions, particularly those of Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, and Object Relations theorists. Additionally, he incorporates techniques from cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), mindfulness practices, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT). Furthermore, his practice is guided by a humanistic perspective, which emphasises an authentic, safe, and non-judgmental therapeutic relationship.
He believes, as Carl Rogers once said:
“People are just as wonderful as sunsets if you let them be. When I look at a sunset, I don’t find myself saying, ‘Soften the orange a bit on the right-hand corner.’ I don’t try to control a sunset. I watch with awe as it unfolds.”

Therapeutic Approach
Paul believes that therapy is a collaborative and open-ended process. His approach includes:
- Depth Psychology: He explores how unconscious patterns and past experiences influence present behaviour.
- Cognitive and Behavioural Techniques: He introduces practical strategies to manage symptoms and develop healthy coping mechanisms.

Paul aims to be more than just a therapist; he acts as a confidant and facilitator, offering clients a safe space to explore and address the complexities of life. His practice aligns with Carl Jung’s belief that:
“The sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light of meaning in the darkness of mere being.”
How It Works
- Initial Consultation: Contact Paul to arrange a first session. During this initial meeting, he will explore what has brought you to therapy, discuss your personal history, and establish how you can move forward together.
- Forms and Consent: You will fill in an information sheet before your first consultation. At the first session, Paul will review the consent form with you before proceeding.
- Session Structure: Therapy sessions typically last 50 minutes, often referred to as the “therapeutic hour.” Sessions generally occur weekly, although Paul remains flexible based on your needs and goals.
- Number of Sessions: Therapy can be brief or a longer-term process, depending on individual needs. Some clients may find relief in just one session, while others may benefit from ongoing support. Paul is always open to discussing and adjusting goals as therapy progresses.
Fees and Policies
- Payment: Paul operates a cash practice. Payments are due after each session, and he will email an invoice. You can pay in cash or via EFT. He will then provide a receipt, which you can use to claim back from your medical aid.
- Medical Aid Claims: In some cases, Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMBs) may apply if the client meets specific diagnostic criteria. Keep in mind that this diagnosis will become part of your medical record.
- Cancellation Policy: He maintains a 24-hour cancellation policy. Any appointment not cancelled within this timeframe will incur a full session charge.
