Mike Clarke Consultant Vascular Surgeon Newcastle brings extensive experience and dedication to vascular surgery. Since qualifying from the University of Edinburgh Medical School in 1989, Mr Clarke moved to the North East in 1993 to build his surgical career. After becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1994, he focused on vascular surgery with a deep commitment to patient care.
Mr Clarke has worked as a Consultant Vascular Surgeon at the Freeman Hospital since 2001. He earned an MD from Newcastle University after two years studying myointimal hyperplasia. Furthermore, his special interests include all areas of arterial surgery, particularly complex aortic and carotid procedures. Consequently, his skills cover a broad spectrum of vascular conditions, ensuring patients receive comprehensive treatment.
In addition to clinical practice, Mr Clarke actively contributes to medical education. He served as Clinical Tutor from 2003 to 2010, where he implemented Foundation Programme training in Newcastle. Later, in 2013, he established the Vascular Surgery training programme in the Northern Region and served as Training Programme Director until 2020. Moreover, he currently represents the East of England as Liaison Member on the Vascular Surgery Specialty Advisory Committee. His role on the RCSEd Specialty Programme Board further highlights his dedication to shaping future surgeons.
Mr Clarke’s leadership extends beyond surgery into clinical governance. For six years, he led clinical governance for Newcastle Hospitals’ surgical directorate. Additionally, his involvement with the Vascular Society included active membership on the Audit & Quality Improvement Committee. In 2015, he became Clinical Director for Patient Safety & Quality Improvement, overseeing preparations for the Trust’s CQC inspection. Today, he chairs the Trust’s Patient Safety Group, driving quality care improvements.
During his managerial career, Mr Clarke has held significant leadership roles. He served as Clinical Lead for Vascular Surgery and Clinical Director of Surgical Services at Newcastle Hospitals. During this time, he played a key role in reorganizing vascular services in the region. His leadership has helped ensure that patients benefit from efficient, high-quality vascular care.
