ADHD in Adults

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) isn’t just a childhood condition. For many, it persists into adulthood, often undiagnosed. Adult ADHD affects attention span, emotional regulation, time management, and impulse control. In South Africa, the condition is underrecognised in adults, and many live for decades without a formal diagnosis.

What Is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Adults?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that alters brain function, especially in areas related to executive functioning — such as memory, organisation, and planning. While hyperactivity may reduce with age, issues like inattention, distractibility, and poor impulse control often remain.

Common Myths

  • “You can’t have ADHD if you weren’t diagnosed as a child.”
  • “It’s just laziness or poor discipline.”
  • “Adults outgrow ADHD.”

These misconceptions delay diagnosis and treatment. In reality, many adults only realise they have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder after one of their children is diagnosed or after facing career or relationship difficulties.
