What is High-Functioning Anxiety, Really?

When we think of anxiety, we often picture someone visibly struggling—maybe battling panic attacks or avoiding social situations. But anxiety isn’t always easy to spot. High-functioning anxiety is a quieter, more hidden form of anxiety. On the outside, people who experience it may seem organised, confident, and even successful. On the inside, though, they’re battling constant worry, overthinking, and a never-ending need to do everything just right. You might know someone like this—or even recognise yourself in this description. How Does High-Functioning Anxiety Show Up? The tricky thing about high-functioning anxiety is that it often hides in plain sight. Here are some common signs: These behaviours might look like strengths to others, but they often come from a place of fear, self-doubt, or the need to avoid criticism. Why Is It Called “High-Functioning”? The term “high-functioning” simply means that despite the anxiety, you’re still managing daily life—work, relationships, errands. But just because you seem to be handling it all doesn’t mean it’s easy or healthy. People with high-functioning anxiety often feel like they’re running on empty. It’s like being on a treadmill set to “sprint”—you might not fall off, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t exhausted. What Causes High-Functioning Anxiety? There’s no single answer, but several factors might contribute: How Common Is Anxiety in South Africa? Anxiety disorders, including high-functioning anxiety, are more common than many realise. According to the South African Stress and Health (SASH) study, 30.3% of South Africans experience a mental health condition at some point in their lives. Anxiety disorders are the most common, with the highest rates in the Western Cape and the lowest in the Northern Cape. Globally, studies show similar trends. Anxiety is one of the most widespread mental health challenges, yet forms like high-functioning anxiety often go unnoticed because people seem to “have it together.” How High-Functioning Anxiety Affects Daily Life If you have high-functioning anxiety, you might be juggling a lot while quietly dealing with: What Can Help? If you think you’re dealing with high-functioning anxiety, there are ways to manage it: Where to Find Support in South Africa There’s no need to face anxiety alone. Here are some helpful resources: Final Thoughts High-functioning anxiety is often invisible, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less real. If you’ve been feeling this way, know you’re not alone—and that there’s no shame in reaching out for help. Taking even small steps to understand and manage your anxiety can make a big difference in your daily life and well-being. The Questions I Ask Myself to Stay Connected

As I get older, I’ve realised how important it is to focus on the people and things that truly matter—including checking in with myself. If we take the time to check in on the people we care about, why not extend the same courtesy to ourselves? Here are seven questions I ask to stay connected and mindful of my mental and emotional well-being. 1. How am I feeling right now, emotionally and physically? This is the first question I ask myself when I pause to reflect. Am I anxious, happy, stressed, or experiencing a mix of emotions? The first step to understanding what I need is being honest with myself, even when it’s uncomfortable. 2. What’s taking up most of my mental energy lately? Work, family and daily responsibilities tend to take up a lot of mental space. When I ask this question, it helps me pinpoint what’s occupying my mind and whether it’s energising me or draining me. If it’s the latter, I know it’s time to address it or let it go. 3. What do I need more of in my life right now? Sometimes, I sense that something’s missing, but identifying it can be tricky. Asking myself this question helps me zero in on what I need—whether it’s more rest, less screen time, or quality moments with loved ones. Understanding this allows me to make small, meaningful changes to restore balance. 4. Have I been kind to myself today? It’s easy to slip into negative self-talk, especially when I’m stressed or feeling down. This question reminds me to consider how I’m treating myself and to recognise when I’m being too harsh. It’s a nudge to show myself compassion and remember that it’s okay not to have everything figured out. 5. What’s one small thing I can do right now to feel a little better? When I feel low or scattered, this question can shift my perspective. Sometimes, it’s as simple as taking deep breaths, stretching, or stepping outside for fresh air. These small acts of self-care might seem insignificant, but they add up and make a noticeable difference over time. 6. Am I holding onto something I need to let go of? We all carry burdens—whether it’s guilt, stress, anger, or past mistakes. This question helps me reflect on what might be weighing me down and decide whether it’s time to release it. Letting go of unnecessary baggage creates space for growth and peace of mind. 7. What am I grateful for today? This question shifts my focus from feeling overwhelmed or stuck to recognising the good around me. Whether it’s a warm cup of coffee, a meaningful conversation, or a quiet moment to myself, gratitude helps me maintain a healthier perspective and stay grounded. Checking in with myself isn’t about perfection or having all the answers. It’s about taking the time to understand where I’m at, practising kindness toward myself, and making small adjustments that improve my sense of balance and well-being. If you haven’t tried self-check-ins yet, I encourage you to start with these questions. You might be surprised at how much they help you connect with yourself and find clarity and peace. Signs You Could Be Mentally Exhausted

Mental exhaustion is more than just feeling tired after a long day. It’s a deeper kind of fatigue that affects your mind, body, and emotions. Unlike physical exhaustion, it doesn’t go away after a good night’s sleep—it lingers, making even simple tasks feel overwhelming. Here are some common signs you might be mentally exhausted: 1. Always Tired, Even After Rest You sleep through the night, yet you wake up feeling just as tired as the day before. No amount of rest seems to restore your energy. 2. Getting Annoyed Easily Little things that didn’t bother you before now irritate you. You might find yourself snapping at others or feeling frustrated over the smallest inconveniences. 3. Hard to Focus It’s tough to stay on task, and your mind feels foggy. You lose track of what you were doing or forget things more often than usual. 4. No Motivation You feel uninterested in things you used to enjoy. Even getting started on simple tasks feels impossible at times. 5. Emotional Ups and Downs You might feel on the verge of tears one moment and completely numb the next. Your emotions seem out of control or unusually flat. 6. Body Feels Stressed Your body mirrors your mental state. Headaches, tension, stomach problems, or feeling constantly tense are all physical signs of mental exhaustion. 7. Avoiding People Socialising feels like too much work. You start cancelling plans or ignoring calls because being around people seems exhausting. 8. Struggling with Everyday Tasks Basic things like answering emails, cooking, or having to leave the house feel overwhelming. You might start procrastinating or avoiding them altogether. If these signs feel familiar, it’s a clear signal to take a step back and recharge. Mental exhaustion doesn’t have to become your default state. Recognising the signs is the first step toward reclaiming your energy and well-being. Take care of yourself—your mind and body deserves it. Mental Matters is a resource and information platform. Are People Just Meaner These Days, or Am I Just Sensitive?

We live in a society that can feel pretty judgmental and, honestly, toxic at times. Everywhere you look, someone has an opinion—raw, unfiltered, and often hits right where it hurts most. Of course, there are those rare gems who keep to themselves and resist the “I’m entitled to my opinion” mentality. Respect to them. How many of us have had the thought: “People are so damn mean?” followed by that nagging feeling, “Am I just too damn sensitive?” Just the other day, I came across a comment online where someone was tearing apart someone else’s appearance in the most degrading way. I remember thinking, how can a few words from a stranger feel so personal? It seems like everyone and their cat (no disrespect to cats) has an opinion these days, and nothing feels private anymore. The anonymity of the internet has definitely made people bolder. They’ll say things online that they’d never dream of saying face-to-face. This has created the perfect breeding ground for judgment, toxicity, and trolling. It’s so in-your-face and hard to avoid. But, honestly, as bad as online trolls can be, I think the people who judge you straight to your face can sometimes be even worse. I’ve caught myself judging others when I’m stressed or overwhelmed, and I know I haven’t always been at my best when I’m not feeling it. We all fall into that trap sometimes. Not that it’s an excuse to be a shitty human. It’s just a reminder that we’re all human and we can slip up. And sometimes, there’s also that little voice in my head that says, “You’re being silly and sensitive. It’s no big deal.” A great way to brush off what could be completely valid feelings, right? I can’t even count how many times I’ve had those words thrown at me, leaving me to wonder if I’m being dramatic or just overreacting. But over time, I’ve actually come to appreciate that I’m sensitive. It keeps me more in tune with my own emotions and, just as importantly, with the emotions of others. It makes me feel like I care. And honestly, if more of us took a moment to think about how our words impact others, the world would be a little kinder. So, maybe people are meaner these days. Or maybe the world has always had its share of cruelty, and we’re just more aware of it now. Either way, it’s okay to feel overwhelmed. It’s okay to wish for a kinder world. And you’re not too sensitive for wanting kindness. Sensitivity, after all, is what makes us human. Mental Matters is a resource and information platform. We do not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. While the information on our website is for general awareness and support, it should not replace professional advice.
