Treatment and Management of AMD

Treatment and Management of AMD

Treatment and Management of AMD

While there is no cure for AMD, several treatment strategies can slow progression and preserve vision.

Dry AMD Treatment

  1. AREDS2 Supplements
    • Vitamins C and E, zinc, copper, lutein, and zeaxanthin may reduce progression in intermediate or late-stage dry AMD.
  2. Lifestyle Changes
    • Stop smoking, improve your diet, and manage chronic diseases like diabetes or hypertension.
  3. Low-Vision Aids
    • Magnifying glasses, large-print books, and digital tools help improve daily function.

Treatment and Management of AMD

Wet AMD Treatment

  1. Anti-VEGF Injections
    • Medications like Avastin, Eylea, or Lucentis are injected directly into the eye to block abnormal blood vessels.
  2. Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
    • A laser treatment used less often but still helpful in some cases.
  3. Laser Surgery
    • Occasionally used to seal off bleeding vessels.

In South Africa, anti-VEGF treatments are available in private settings but limited in public hospitals. Access to timely care is critical, especially for wet AMD, where vision loss can occur rapidly.
